On a warm summer day, the beach and swimming area at Schreeder Pond teem with activity. Parking spots are tough to come by and picnic tables are filled as quickly as they are vacated. But the 18 miles of trails that wind through the surrounding woods are yours alone. Long ago, Native Americans hunted and fished in this valley. The many Native American artifacts that have been found here indicate that the natives slept beneath the rock overhangs and held tribal meetings in the rocky hills. Kids may be lucky enough to see an arrowhead. It’s unlikely, though, that they will come across any signs of the witches said to have inhabited the area. Legends tell of the two mischievous witches, “Goody Wee” and “Betty Wee,” who lived in the hollow and enjoyed playing nasty tricks on their neighbors.
