This one will take your breath away—literally, at first, as you pick your way up a steep slope for 0.25 mile and then figuratively as you gaze from atop a rocky outcrop at the distant hills and the towns nestled in the faraway valleys. The vistas are so magnificent they seem almost unreal. It feels as if you are standing on a stage with a spectacular backdrop rather than perching on the edge of a 300-foot cliff. As you inch along the edge of the ridge that rises over Crescent Lake, the breathtaking panoramas continue until the path curls into the woods and heads for Lamentation Mountain. In this case, good judgment is more critical to a successful hike than physical stamina—the only significant vertical gain occurs immediately. Older children with previous hiking experience and the ability to proceed with caution will thoroughly enjoy this trip.
