From atop the tower at Castle Craig, you will be able to see the Sleeping Giant hills to the south, the Metacomet ridges to the north, and, far away, Mount Tom in Massachusetts and the distant hills of the Holyoke range. Pick a clear day to hike this section of the Metacomet Trail to take full advantage of the views. It’s fairly tough—long, with some steep climbs—so be prepared to carry small children who may tire out. But the stone lookout tower at Castle Craig is a perfect turnaround point for those who choose not to follow the path all the way to West Peak. As you drive along I-691, have the kids look for the “castle” perched on the side of the hill.
