The Jessie Gerard Trail is one of many interesting paths that wander through the 3000-acre Peoples State Forest. Each trail is named for an individual who played a significant role in acquiring or developing the land for the park. The Jessie Gerard Trail begins at the site of an old Native American settlement known as Barkhamsted Lighthouse near East River Road and climbs to an overlook by way of 299 stone steps. Challenging climbs, pleasant forest surroundings, and magnificent views from two overlooks make this a great hike for families in good condition with some previous hiking experience. Although no camping is allowed at Peoples State Forest, the neighboring American Legion State Forest (just across the Farmington River) does have camping facilities.
