Little is known about the peculiar man for whom this cave is named. He was said to be Jules Bourglay, who left his home in Lyons, France, when his poor financial judgment ruined the family leather business and his future wife left him. Dressed completely in leather clothing (which was estimated to weigh 60 pounds) and sleeping only in caves, he roamed Connecticut for nearly 30 years in the late 1800s. He refused to sleep in barns or homes but did accept food handouts, expressing his thanks with grunts. His body was eventually found in a cave near Ossining, New York. The trip along the Mattatuck Trail to Leatherman Cave, one of this wanderer’s favorite resting places, offers breathtaking views of the nearby rolling hills. Be warned, however, that these panoramas are from atop precipitous cliffs at trail’s edge. Kids who are not “trail-wise” should postpone this hike until they have more experience.
