This short hike is still a challenging one for small hikers because you will gain 400 feet within 0.5 mile. The summit, at 1291 feet, stands more than 100 feet higher than the Massachusetts mountain that shares its name. The climb through dense forest culminates in a fabulous view from atop the stone tower. After the hike, the whole family can take a dive into the pristine water of Mount Tom Pond and then finish the day with a beachside picnic. Toilets, changing houses, and drinking water are available near the beach. (If you hike midwinter, bring your ice skates and explore the pond Dorothy Hamill–style at the end of your walk.)
