You likely already know that this park as a terrific place for winter sports, but did you realize that Mohawk’s warmer weather trail system is also superb? The extensive views from Mohawk’s 1683-foot summit not only have been admired by hikers but also put to practical use since colonial days. Centuries ago, Tunxis and Paugussett Indians sent smoke signals from the mountaintop to warn fellow tribesmen of any aggressive moves made by the enemy Mohawks (thus, the name of the mountain). In recent years, rangers have scanned the hillsides from the summit lookout tower for forest fires. The facilities here are extensive, also. So, if you’ve only thought to visit Mohawk Mountain after the first snowfall, think again!
