Next to the Lakeshore Trail, this is the most popular walk in the area, if not in Banff Park. Its main attraction is that it passes a teahouse where you can get well-earned refreshments. The walk is short but steep. Although the surrounding mountains are relatively low, they are close and have precipitous faces. Besides the colourful lake and its spectacular setting, the site is famed for the small animals that inhabit the rocks nearby and come out in search of illegal handouts; golden-mantled ground squirrels and Clark’s nutcrackers are the most common beggars. Nearby, marmots, chipmunks, and pikas are common. After dusk, porcupines appear on the trail.
