A 0.9 km level trail leads to Copper Lake, which has superb views of Castle Mountain. Smith Lake is named for legendary prospector Joe Smith who arrived at nearby Silver City in 1882 and remained as a squatter more than 50 years after Silver City became a ghost town. From Smith Lake, you see Copper Mountain (named after copper mines in the Silver City era). The hike to Smith Lake is 1.6 km. If you circle the lake by a faint, rough 1 km-long fisherman’s path, you see Castle Mountain. currently offers topo maps from the entire United States. We plan to expand our topomap database in the future, however this map is not available at this time. Thank you for your understanding.
