It’s best to do this hike on a sunny day in late summer. Deep snow often lingers into July in Bourgeau Lake’s high shady basin and Harvey Lake may be frozen until August. Most of the way to Bourgeau Lake is steep, and in forest, with little to see. Bourgeau Lake is a rather shallow tarn backed by stark rubble and the cliffs of Mt. Bourgeau. The glory of the trip is Harvey Pass (2450 m) with its rich azure lake from where you see the distant wedge of Mt. Assiniboine, highest summit in Banff Park. En route to Harvey Pass you get good views back to Bourgeau Lake, which appears more attractive as you ascend. Near Harvey Pass, you go through a large verdant amphitheatre dominated by a giant outlier of Mt. Brett. By exploring the meadows at the pass, you see even better panoramas.
