The trail with the best views of Banff’s largest lake is the one to Aylmer Lookout, site of a fire tower that operated from 1948. The tower was torn down in 1985, after Banff Park went to an electronic system of tracking lightning strikes. From the Lookout site you see most of Lake Minnewanka, plus a superb panorama of mountains. You are permitted to cycle the trail to km 8.1. Lake Minnewanka’s low elevation allows early and late season hiking. If you go before mid-July, check yourself for ticks. Mountain sheep frequent the route, especially near the crest of the hillside on Mt. Astley, past Stewart Canyon, and at the Lookout site.
