Difficult hiking over two high passes on often wet trail with minor routefinding challenges. The pleasant hike over Surprise and Providence passes is the cream of the Great Divide Trail. Much of the segment is in the open, either in alpine or sub-alpine meadows. The trail is in good shape and the scenery easy to enjoy. The shoulder of Casket Mountain spills wildflowers down its slopes in midsummer and you may see mountain caribou feeding on lichens up the slopes of Mount Côté. There is a high cross-country traverse to Kakwa Lake letting you straddle the Divide for one last time before reaching the spellbinding northern terminus.
