Our destination is the rancher's shelter on the east shore of Soda Lake. The lake itself is fairly shallow, alkaline and not all that attractive, but the surroundings are quite beautiful. While this is ranchland and fraught with cows, there is a surprising variety of wildlife. There must be food enough in the lake that it doesn't deter the duck population, and nearby (freshwater) ponds support large numbers of Canada geese. The unmistakable, primitive-sounding croak of sandhill cranes is often heard as you near the cabin, their sensitive hearing detecting intruders a long way off. For some reason, the eastern bluebird is especially attracted to this area, and in spring large flocks of them appear to favour the aspen stands at the south end of the lake. Coyotes and foxes are around, and black bear too in the less open areas.
