This is a gentle and most attractive hike through aspen forest bordering a couple of small lakes and a larger one popular with fishers. Hiking in early July, the forest is a tapestry of dazzling purples, reds, pinks and yellows when the lupines, Indian paintbrush, tiger lilies and wild roses are at their showy best. The smaller lakes en route: Raspberry, Little Skunk and Big Skunk, are loud with loons. Beaver lodges are prominent in all three lakes and there is considerable bird life, including osprey. If all this sounds idyllic, there are a couple of drawbacks. This is a horse trail, used steadily, and after rain it can become quite chewed up and muddy for stretches.
