This fairly strenuous high-level hike along the delectable north ridge of Moose Mountain is my favorite approach to the summit. On July 28, 1996, it had its first ascent "with bike" by Doug Eastcott and Greg Achten. Called East Ridge trail in the second edition, it's "the trail that never got built". However, during the past 10 years, the sheer number of hikers have improved existing game trails without help from a K Country trail crew, leading me to surmise this is the new economical way of trail building. So while there are generally trails below treeline, the ridge above treeline remains largely a route following grassy hogbacks and easy scree ridges with no exposure.
