This lovely little trail is named after George William (Curly) Sand of Minnesota who came to the area about 1946, hired by the North Sheep Stock Association to track with his hounds cougars and grizzlies that were killing yearlings up in The Muskeg. "In two years he killed 11 grizzlies and many black bear beside". At his funeral "Curly never let the truth spoil a good story" said the minister, so you hope the numbers are exaggerated. Officially, it makes possible a loop with 9999 trail for campers with two legs who don't mind sploshing twice across Threepoint Creek. Unofficially, it makes a far better loop with Square Butte trails.
