Distance 1.5 km from campsite, height gain 396 m, high point 2210 m. A lake of unusual depth cradled between Mt. McPhail and Horned Mountain had its first recorded visit by Patterson in 1935. He described the headwall below the lake as, "a nasty-looking proposition; it was high, smooth and very steep, and there was nothing to hang on to - a couple of small trees widely separated, a patch of grass, a bit of wild rose and a bit of buckbrush, that was all". Which way did he go? Obviously not on the line of today's trail which is an easy scramble rarely requiring the use of hands. Don't plan on camping at the lake.
