A short, rough hike up a geologically interesting valley in the Fairholme Range. Of course, the creek's name should really be Devon or Carbon, or Paleo. When named in 1913 it was thought the prominent black shale outcrop was of Jurassic age in the Mesozoic. It was later proved to be late Devonian and early Carboniferous/Mississippian in the Paleozoic Era. So what if the geologists were out by 200 million years.
