This hike is perfect for those who enjoy stretching their legs on a steep climb. The best time of year to do this hike is late spring or early summer when there is still snow on the surrounding peaks. The magnificent scenery is nothing less than inspiring! From the trailhead at the unnamed creek on the west side of the highway, walk along the levee on the north (right-hand) side of the creek. In late spring, the levee supports yellow butter-and-eggs, lupins and fragrant wild sage. At the end of the levee continue along game trails that parallel the lichen-encrusted rock creek. At a rock cairn on a low, open slope, take a 90 degree turn to the right and climb uphill to intersect with a footpath. Turn left onto the footpath. If you turn to the right you reach the lower end of the Icefall Loop hike.
