This section, the granddaddy of northern California fly fishing rivers, is gorgeous in all respects. It provides a world-class experience almost every time. You must give this fishery a try. Believe me, it’s worth it. On July 14, 1991, a railroad tanker crashed and spilled 19,000 gallons of toxins into the river. Nearly all the fish and the supporting food chain died as a result. Don’t be dismayed, however, time has been on our side. Nature’s ability to recover and adapt has been nothing short of miraculous! Many in the fly fishing community believe that this fishery is actually better today than it was prior to the accident. Yes, it’s a wonder, and you can now enjoy amazing, high-quality action for beautiful trout. Types of Fish: Rainbow and brown trout, smallmouth bass. This fly-fishing chapter describes the "where, when, and how" for fishing in this area. It includes a full-page map and information on the known hatches, suggested equipment to use, the best flies to use, season, limits, nearby accommodations, and camping.
