Of northern California’s major coastal rivers, the Russian is closest to major population areas. It also runs through more civilization than most rivers of this type. Access is the biggest hurdle that anglers contend with, because private lands make getting to the water difficult for anyone on foot. The flip side of this coin is the easy wading in much of the stream, once you do find passage to the water. Deeper pools and riffles exist along the lower stretch, while the upper reaches are a mix of rapids, undercut banks, flats, and pools. Types of Fish: King salmon (chinook), steelhead, shad, smallmouth and largemouth bass. This fly-fishing chapter describes the "where, when, and how" for fishing in this area. It includes a full-page map and information on the known hatches, suggested equipment to use, the best flies to use, season, limits, nearby accommodations, and camping.
