At first glance, the Sespe Creek Wilderness is far from spectacular. In a state that’s spoiled with breathtaking backcountry trout waters, the Sespe can seem a bit bare and worn down in the eyes of an outsider. The Sespe, located less than 60 miles outside the Los Angeles area, is indeed the creaky backbone of what is still a very weary wilderness in the Los Padres National Forest. But look at that same stretch of canyon through the eyes of its resilient wildlife and you’ll see a different storyline: A tale of resurrection that has breathed new life into a handful of endangered species bouncing back from the brink of extinction. This fly-fishing chapter describes the "where, when, and how" for fishing in this area. It includes a full-page map and information on the known hatches, suggested equipment to use, the best flies to use, season, limits, nearby accommodations, and camping.
