The area around La Paz, capital of Baja California Sur, offers a variety of fly fishing venues and is a good base for jaunts to several other locations featured in this guidebook. It is 125 miles (200 km) north of Cabo San Lucas, which is becoming more tourist oriented by the minute. There is plenty to do in La Paz, too. Non-fishing family members can enjoy the sights, scenes, and shopping in this vibrant city while the fly fisher can rent a car or hire a cab and travel a scant 20 miles out to Punta Las Pilitas. You’ll find deserted beaches with rocky shorelines and an assortment of fish species including cabrilla, pargo, rooster, bonito, sierra, jacks and corvina. Working your way back toward town, you will find other beaches and coves with exotic names like Tecolote and Balandra. These offer sandy and rocky beaches and even some with thick mangroves. Reports of bonefish taken in El Mogote are intriguing. The areas closer to town are fished extensively and will not provide the wide-open action for which one has traveled. That said, you still never know what you might find right in La Paz. Types of Fish: Shore: Rock areas - cabrilla, pargo, triggerfish, pompano, croaker. Sandy areas - jacks, rooster, pompano, ladyfish, giant needlefish, sierra, corvina. Inshore (within Bahía De La Paz): Rooster, bonito, sierra, jacks, corvina, triggerfish, snook. Offshore: Marlin, sailfish, tuna, wahoo, dorado. currently offers topo maps from the entire United States. We plan to expand our topomap database in the future, however this map is not available at this time. Thank you for your understanding.
