Anyone who has ever visited Arizona has been to or heard of the beautiful red rock country of Sedona. Few of these visitors realize that the small creek running through town is one of the finest trout streams in the Southwest. Oak Creek is spring-fed from the upper reaches of Oak Creek Canyon. It flows 42 miles to the Verde River, and the upper canyon section holds good trout. Beyond the Page Springs area the water becomes too warm for trout. The creek flows cold and clear and fishes well most of the year. The exceptions are during the brief spring runoff period or the occasional gully washer. The gradient is high near the top of the canyon but mellows around the confluence of the West Fork of Oak Creek. From here downstream there are lots of riffles and pools that test a fly fisher’s skills. Some parts of the creek canyon are tight and require a short rod and casting prowess, while other sections are wide open with more than enough room for even a 9' rod. The canyon is awe-inspiring when the Navajo sandstone is lit brilliant red by the high desert sun. Types of Fish: Rainbow trout, wild brown trout. This eTrail covers the "where, when, and how" to fish in this region. You'll get a full-page map and information on the known hatches, suggested equipment to bring, and the best flies to use.
