The East and West Forks of the Black River are two of the most popular and productive flywaters in the state. They’re in the alpine zone of the White Mountains in Arizona that are reminiscent of the Colorado High Country. The East Fork is popular and you will have trouble finding solitude. It is worth a visit, but to avoid the crowds, go in the early spring and late fall. The West Fork is just the opposite. A dusty, dirt road leads to the only access on the upper creek, which is where most fly fishers go. A large portion of the stream is high in the mountains. There is good brown trout fishing below the barriers which is still in the catch and release area. The West Fork should be an above average fishery for some time to come! Both streams flow clear and low throughout the summer and fall. The many riffles, pools and runs are perfect for the small stream angler. The West Fork is one of only two streams in Arizona designated catch and release. It is also full of Apache trout. Types of Fish: West Fork, upper catch and release section, Apache trout. Lower West Fork and East Fork, rainbow and brown trout. This eTrail covers the "where, when, and how" to fish in this region. You'll get a full-page map and information on the known hatches, suggested equipment to bring, and the best flies to use.
