Wooded trails on the lower slopes of the Sandias’ east side are ideal for casual hikes in any season. This route has it all—travertine springs, an overlook, a trailside stream, and a few unnatural objects that aren’t as easy to explain. The hike begins at the upper parking area, Cienega Spring. In the event of a seasonal gate closure (November-April), the hike begins at the lower parking area, adding about a mile to the overall route. Facilities include picnic shelters, restrooms, drinking water, nature trails, and wheelchair access.
