Nowhere else will you encounter the pure white gypsum sand that is found in this amazing national monument. It is whiter than snow. In fact, combined with the abundant sunshine in this part of New Mexico, it can almost be blinding. Unlike the Great Sand Dunes, the dunes of White Sands are rather low in comparison – only 60 feet high. But you come here for the color and the surreal surroundings, not the size. Although there is some vegetation that has uniquely adapted to this hostile environment, it is the white sands that draws the visitor. There is a great deal of erosion caused by the dry winds, leaving pulverized gypsum in its wake. The winds blow the remnants northeast across the region and they pile into the widespread dunes. This eTrail explains in detail how to tour the park. In addition to a park map the details include driving tours, outdoor recreation, accommodations, campgrounds, dining, and more.
