Mesa Verde was established primarily because it is one of the nation’s most important archaeological preserves, but it also happens to be an area of outstanding natural beauty. Mesa Verde means Green Table, and that is exactly what it looks like from a distance: a huge flat-topped plateau covered with forest. The plateau is some 2,000 feet above the level of the surrounding valley. On the top of the mesa are many small, deep canyons. In these canyons are found the large and well-preserved remains of cliff dwellings. The area was inhabited as early as 500 A.D., but the remains that are visible today date from around the 13th century. It is fascinating to see how the so-called primitive cultures that lived here adapted their homes to the difficult environment and terrain. A visit to Mesa Verde is one that will leave a deep impression on you for its beauty as well as its history. This eTrail explains in detail how to tour the park. In addition to a park map the details include driving tours, outdoor recreation, accommodations, campgrounds, dining, and more.
