Here is a place that is virtually unknown to most people, even those who have done quite a bit of traveling. This is a most perplexing state of affairs for me, because the Colorado National Monument is easily accessible and, more important, is one of the most beautiful sights in America. Perhaps because of its relative obscurity, the visitor comes away even more impressed by its awe-inspiring vistas. The monument is an impressive example of the effects of erosion from wind and rain on the landscape. A masterpiece of nature, the immense monolithic formations have such fanciful names as the Coke Ovens and the Pipe Organ. They rise from a flat canyon over 1,000 feet deep and often reach above the plateau rim, from which you will be viewing them. This eTrail explains in detail how to tour the park. In addition to a park map the details include driving tours, outdoor recreation, accommodations, campgrounds, dining, and more.
