Howe Sound, British Columbia's most southerly fjord and a legacy from the last glacial period, stretches for 44 km (26 miles) from Horseshoe Bay to Squamish. Along its length, the sound receives the waters of numerous creeks that rush headlong down the sheer mountainsides, torrents that call for resourceful engineering and constant maintenance to keep the winding highway and railroad tracks safe for traffic. The drive from Horseshoe Bay is spectacular, with views across the water to Bowen, Gambier and Anvil islands and the mountains of the Sunshine Coast beyond. However, there are few places along the sound where one can explore on foot without undertaking a rugged hike. So whether you are en route to Squamish or Whistler, or simply enjoying a drive up the sound, a break at Porteau Cove, with its easy access to the water, can be very welcome. Highlights: Beach; Howe Sound views, the Royal Hudson, scuba divers; intertidal life. Terrain: One short climb. Road, trail and pebble beach.
