For a family outing in the region around the Stave dams, it is hard to beat a visit to Rolley Lake. Tucked away amid tall trees on a plateau above Stave Lake, Rolley is secluded yet welcoming, attributes that perhaps led homesteaders James and Fanny Rolley to settle there in the 1880s. Today, thoughtfully planned campgrounds and a ban on motor boats help to preserve a peaceful atmosphere, with no sounds other than birdsong and the voices of people enjoying themselves in small boats on the water. Highlights: Lake, evergreen forest, swamp; sweet gale, ninebark; banana slugs. Terrain: Flat. Boardwalk and forest trail. Some areas accessible to wheelchairs.
