The open, rolling plateau northeast of Allison Pass in Manning Park may be unsuspected by most travelers following the Skagit and Similkameen river valleys between Hope and Princeton. In this high backcountry, miles of subalpine meadows bloom in profusion from mid-July to mid-August. As the snow recedes in late June, first come the yellow glacier lilies and creamy western anemones, followed by dazzling fields of lupines, paintbrush, valerian, columbine and hellebore. Hugging the earth are mats of tiny saxifrages, phlox and moss campion, while hardy red mountain heather blooms beside the trail.
