Many visitors to Hope walk through the Othello-Quintette Tunnels and take a stroll along the old Kettle Valley Railway bed. Those looking for a more challenging outing can include the Hope-Nicola Valley Trail, thereby sampling even more of the region’s colourful history. This old cattle road, once used to transport supplies between the coast and the Princeton/Merritt areas, has been in place since the 1870s and is amazingly well preserved. Do not be dismayed by the steep beginning to the Hope-Nicola Trail—the gradient soon eases. As you climb more gently through mixed forest of maples and conifers, or rest at one of the viewpoints, it is not difficult to imagine the strings of laden mules plodding along this same path more than a hundred years ago.
