The Golden Ears massif for which this provincial park is named is tantalizingly out of reach for the day hiker, or indeed for any but the experienced climber. Less ambitious hikers, however, may venture by park trails into the upper Gold Creek valley and thus get a taste of the rugged backcountry. One such trail traverses the forested slopes on the east side of Gold Creek, descending to an idyllic beach with a spectacular view of the peaks. East Canyon Trail, once a stony logging road, is now nicely softened by nature, its surface smoothed out to accommodate hikers, equestrians and cyclists. An option for hikers who can cope with some rougher terrain is to combine the east canyon route with Lower Falls Trail by means of a casual connector. A circular trip is always satisfying, especially when it adds one of the region’s most beautiful waterfalls to the day’s delights.
