For a day when you haven’t much time but feel like a taste of the mountains, Dog Mountain in Mount Seymour Provincial Park is ideal. Only a short drive from the city, this hike can be done easily in a half day. It is a good family hike, provided that everyone can manage a rough trail. Boots are recommended. Be prepared for muddy spots and be sure to restrain young children on the summit bluffs, as the drop-off is very steep. These open bluffs give a fine mountaintop feeling and offer good views of the city and the Seymour River Valley. Dog Mountain is not worth attempting before July, for ice and snow linger in this region. Choose a clear day and, as with all Mount Seymour trips, take insect repellent.
