Mystic is one of the oldest shipbuilding and whaling ports in New England. Mystic was settled in 1654; its name derived from the Pequot Indian Mistuket. The village of Mystic is divided by the Mystic River, one half of it lying in the town of Groton, the other in Stonington. Many fine old homes lie on its west bank in Groton; Mystic Seaport, Mystic Marinelife Aquarium, and Olde Mistick Village, on the east bank in Stonington. Stonington, one of the most impressive old towns on the New England coast. As its name suggests, the land around Stonington was rocky, and settlers had a difficult time producing food. They also found it hard to keep wolves from necessarily shallow graves. Eventually, they began to top each grave with a heavy stone slab. These wolf stones can still be seen in the local cemetery. The compact town is laid out on a narrow peninsula, its fine captains’ homes, many of them still in use, jammed together. For anyone interested in colonial architecture, this is a fine place for a leisurely walk surrounded by homes with exteriors largely unchanged in centuries. In addition to visiting Mystic and Stonington, this itinerary includes a side trip to Mashantucket.
