The area along the Connecticut River is a yachtsman’s paradise, with beautiful harbors in Old Saybrook, Old Lyme, and Hamburg Cove. Essex, on the west shore, has preserved the romance of its maritime and architectural past. The town became a shipbuilding center in the 1720s. Although shipping was the backbone of Essex’s commercial growth, another industry was rooted here as well. At one time Essex was famous for its piano keys. In fact, Ivoryton, as it came to be called, was known to piano manufacturers around the world. Of course, there came a time when plastic keys replaced ivory ones, and yet another old-time industry ended. Today the town thrives through its real estate, yachting facilities, and tourist attractions. In East Haddam you can enjoy the outdoors in two great parks nearby, Devil's Hopyard State Park and Gillette Castle State Park. Old Lyme, originally named for a similar seaside community in England, Lyme Regis, once had a sea captain and his family living in every house in town. The lovely old houses remain, and the town is a fine example of early America.
