The Pootatuck Indians conveyed title of land in the western hills of Connecticut to the residents of Hartford and Windsor, who named it Litchfield. The early settlers, led by John Marsh and John Buell in 1719, built churches, gristmills, a school, and houses on the rolling hills. Litchfield’s location along natural routes from New York, Albany, Hartford, and Boston later made the town a busy center of commerce. The village today is a living museum maintained by its residents through the generations. You can see this care in the facades of elegant white clapboard homes that line North and South Streets; most of these are still privately owned. Finally, Woodbury is one of the oldest of the western towns in Connecticut. It was purchased from Chief Pomperaug of the Pootatuck Indians, who lies buried in the center of town. Today Woodbury is known for having more antiques shops per square mile than any other spot in the state. This eTrail contains everything you need to getaway for a quick daytrip or a long weekend jaunt. A route map is included and as are suggestions for the best things to do, places to eat, and places to stay.
