You’ll think you’re in another time zone when you drive into Micanopy (say mick-an-OH-pea), named for an Indian chief. Timucuan Indians had a thriving community here before Europeans arrived, and it’s said to be the oldest continuously occupied inland settlement in the state. When naturalist William Bartram visited here in 1774, he found a Seminole village. Not long after Florida became a U.S. territory, a trading post was established here. Browse the antiques centers and have a meal in one of the restaurants or a picnic on a park bench in the grassy median that divides the main street. The University of Florida is the elephant in the living room of Gainesville, the city’s blessing and curse. Football games bring in 85,000 fans for big weekends, and the city’s population swells and sinks by more than 30,000 depending on whether classes are in session. When fans and students are in town, it’s hard to get restaurant and hotel reservations—and impossible to find a parking space. On the other hand, the university is a travel destination in itself—a world of museums, cultural events, and exciting, youthful action.
