Beginning in the 1870s, soldiers who had served in the Civil War drifted into central Florida to settle down on ranches or to cluster in small towns. St. Cloud retains some of the “cow town” flavor of those early years. Kissimmee and St. Cloud share one convention and visitor bureau, but it’s rare to find St. Cloud mentioned in travel guides. That’s because Walt Disney bought 50 square miles of land just west of Kissimmee, and most growth sprawled in that direction. St. Cloud, well to the east, plays a distant second fiddle, but that is just fine with most folks there. At St. Cloud you can still find the Florida your grandparents saw when they came South in a pre-Disney era. Stroll the old downtown area to peek into boutiques, antiques shops, and cozy eateries. Even though it’s part of the Space Coast tourism orbit, Melbourne is much more than rockets. It’s the site of an international airport that is a good alternative to flying into Orlando and is a major community with its own identity.
