Although it’s a bit farther from Memphis than other destinations in this book, Pine Bluff is a town you won’t want to overlook. Viewed as one of the premier art districts in Arkansas, Pine Bluff offers a multicultural experience for tourists of all ages. The history of the Pine Bluff area is as colorful as the artwork found in this town. The first settler was Joseph Bonne, a man who was half French and half Quapaw Indian. He built his log-cabin home on the high bluff around the early 1800s, and it quickly became known as the Pine Bluff, due to the fact that it was the first bluff supporting pine trees upstream from the mouth of the Arkansas River. Today, Pine Bluff draws visitors from all around. If you’re stressed from work or just looking for a beautiful vacation spot, Hot Springs—known for its natural hot-water geysers and incredible parks—is the place for you. To get there, follow I–40 west toward Little Rock. The thermal waters that gave Hot Springs its name are some of nature’s most incredible works.
