As you follow the banks of the Mississippi River, you’ll see a large area of cobblestones. These cobblestones have a remarkable history—they’ve withstood both battles and yellow fever, and continue to welcome visitors to the Mighty Mississippi. From 1811 to the turn of the twentieth century, the paddlewheel steamboat grew in popularity throughout America; at one time thousands of these boats moved about our nation’s waterways and were major contributors to development. Everything from cattle to imported fabrics could be moved across the country with ease. And as American economy boomed, cities like Memphis came to be developed along the water’s edge. Although long since replaced by the railroad, autos, and airplanes, given all today’s hustle and bustle there’s still something magical about stepping aboard a steamboat and waltzing around the deck. It’s as if Mark Twain might appear at any moment. But even if he doesn’t, there is plenty to keep you entertained on these modern-day boats. Cruises last anywhere from two hours to twelve days—take your pick!
