The first thing visitors see, no matter how they approach Toronto, is the tall needle of the CN Tower rising on the shore. It dwarfs the First Canadian Place and Scotia Plaza buildings, Toronto’s first skyscrapers, which are each about half its height. They in turn dwarf the building that once dominated the skyline, the still imposing twenty-six-story Fairmont Royal York hotel, built in 1929 to serve upscale passengers arriving on the railroad. Three generations of the British Royal family, including Queen Elizabeth II and her father, King George VI, have stayed at the Fairmont Royal York, along with a list of other kings, presidents, prime ministers, and premiers. More stunning skyscrapers concentrate in the downtown Financial District, the most elegant of them Toronto’s City Hall, whose curved glass towers hug a park. Nearby Royal Bank gleams with windows that are colored by 15,500 pounds of real gold. currently offers topo maps from the entire United States.
