Many a New London boy turned his back on the land and took to the sea right from the wharves of this city. Like its sister city, Groton, across the Thames River, New London has a long maritime history that has influenced its development into a center of commerce and industry. No other city on the Connecticut shoreline has an economy more closely connected to the sea. A quick tour of the places where New London touches the Sound and the river reveals ferries, lobster boats, shipyards, and yacht brokers, and all of the businesses that supply and support them—sail lofts and suppliers of navigation equipment, tackle shops and boat riggers, marinas and seafood shacks. In the air are the sounds of bell buoys and foghorns, of Jet Skis and powerboats and even the Coast Guard band. In good weather and bad the Thames is crowded with boat traffic from single scull to Sunfish to submarine.
