Once called East Guilford and connected geographically and politically to the town of Guilford, Madison seemed at one time typical of the small English settlements along the coast. Farmers and fishermen kept Madison well-stocked with onions and potatoes and oysters; sawmills and shipyards used the natural resources of both forest and harbor to build Madison’s reputation as manufacturer of oceangoing wooden vessels. Incorporated as a separate town in 1826 and renamed in tribute to President James Madison, the village eventually took a different course from that of other rapidly developing coastal towns. Pack a bicycle, a bathing suit, and a beach blanket, and come to enjoy the halcyon time warp that bewitches pretty Madison. This eTrail includes detailed descriptions of the best things to do in Madison, places to eat and places to stay, boat excursions and charters, and sources of additional information.
