Even though East Haven was first settled in the mid-1600s in connection with an ironworks that had been established at the southern end of Lake Saltonstall, the real development of the town came much later as an outgrowth of New Haven’s sprawl. Industry here centered on the ironworks that processed bog iron from North Haven, and farming and fishing supplemented the town’s economic base. Life in East Haven remained relatively quiet for most of its early history, the high point being the British raid on the town during the American Revolution and Lafayette’s encampment on the town green. Today the town is mostly residential with unremarkable supporting commercial establishments seen mostly by travelers passing along I–95 through the shopping areas on Frontage Road. Few travelers slow down along this route to see what the town has to offer. Those who exit the highway in East Haven, however, will find one of Connecticut’s most popular family attractions, the Shore Line Trolley Museum. This eTrail includes detailed descriptions of the best things to do in East Haven, places to eat and places to stay, boat excursions and charters, and sources of additional information.
