Nearly 60,000 residents share West Haven’s 10 square miles, leaving little room to entertain tourists in this suburb of New Haven. Settled by the English in 1648, this area was at first called West Farms and was considered part of the New Haven Colony. By 1711, West Farms had formed a separate parish with the area now called Orange, and eventually the two sections became known as the town of Orange. Late in the nineteenth century, a borough called West Haven was created, and in 1921 it became a town. Today, rows of modest homes with neatly groomed yards characterize many neighborhoods; in others, commercial establishments are flanked by apartment complexes and condominium developments right down to the shoreline. Nevertheless, the foresight of the city planners reserved a wide swath of beach for the use of all residents—and, thankfully, out-of-town guests. On your way to towns with sexier attractions, pause for an hour or so to savor the seascape. This eTrail includes detailed descriptions of the best things to do in West Haven, places to eat and places to stay, boat excursions and charters, and sources of additional information.
