Heavily industrialized Bridgeport is unlikely to be the first municipality that comes to mind when travelers consider a visit to a coastal Connecticut town. At first glance, its virtues seem limited to manufacturing ventures, and its connection to the Sound appears a wholly unromantic one. And yet, the state’s largest city is also one of its busiest ports, its harbor offering dockage to massive tankers and cargo vessels loaded with goods destined for shipment to all of New England. Its beaches and salt marshes make up the longest public waterfront in the state, and its many marinas and yacht clubs offer slips and moorings equal to the best of the better-known sailors’ ports along the coast. One of the nation’s oldest lighthouses is in Bridgeport, and, although its beacon is extinguished now, it once guided to safe anchorage the commercial fleet that still plies the offshore fishing grounds for lobsters and Connecticut’s famed bluepoint oysters. If you decide to forgo a visit to Bridgeport, you will miss a wealth of activities linked to the city’s golden history as a center of industry, culture, and trade.
