Tampa, which began as a Native American fishing village, has been luring adventurers for centuries. Ponce de León, the first recorded European visitor, came here in 1513 in search of gold. So did explorers Hernando de Soto in 1539 and Pedro Menéndez in 1565. Situated on Florida’s west coast, Tampa is on Hillsborough Bay, which opens into Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. Tampa served as a military post in 1824, when Fort Brooke was established to monitor the Seminole Indians. In 1885 Don Vincente Martinez Ybor developed a cigar manufacturing center here. But since 1891, when railroad and steamship magnate Henry Plant opened the Tampa Bay Hotel, now a landmark building, Tampa has been a tourist area. Only a short drive from some fine west coast beaches, Tampa offers sophisticated city attractions, an interesting aquarium, and kid-pleasing adventures such as Busch Gardens Tampa and Adventure Island. This eTrail is one complete vacation written with families in mind. It’s loaded with exciting things to do, family-friendly places to lodge and dine, recommended side trips, local sources of information, and detailed travel directions.
