This section covers Mystic and the surrounding towns of Stonington, North Stonington, Noank, Groton, New London, Ledyard, Niantic, and Essex. For centuries, ever since Native American tribes migrated in hot weather to the seashore, Connecticut’s seacoast has drawn summer visitors. Many of the attractions detail sea life, making the various facets of life on and in the water come alive in an interesting manner. Summer isn’t the only time to visit, although it is the prime time. The state’s two top attractions, both of which are open year-round, are in Mystic. Mystic Seaport, a living history museum, re-creates life in a whaling village, and the Mystic Aquarium and Institute for Exploration displays schools of brightly colored fish as well as dolphins, whales, seals, sea lions, and penguins. The U.S. Coast Guard Academy, one of four military institutions, is located in New London, and when the training ship Eagle is in town, you can come aboard. The Nautilus, the first nuclear-powered submarine, is berthed in Groton. The region’s seacoast towns, Niantic, Noank, Stonington, and Waterford, come with plenty of beaches and parks for play.
